bettering our city

Block by Block.

Helping communities revitalize their neighborhoods through direct engagement, and developing strategies to implement change.

who we are

The Love Your Block program is a partnership initiative between the City of Buffalo and Cities of Service that empowers block clubs and other groups to eliminate blight. Through resource development and resident-led projects, the program aims to build relationships that ultimately increase the impact of members within their own communities.

what we do

The Love Your Block model is based on the idea that engaged communities are less likely to let their neighborhoods fall into blighted conditions, and can act as a powerful force in preventing crime and other negative behaviors. We believe that by connecting residents to city leaders & community organizations, we can create solutions that make our neighborhoods better places to live. Whether that means converting a vacant lot into a functional space, painting a mural, or recruiting volunteers to help older residents make simple home repairs- Love Your Block offers a variety of services to make changes that improve life in the City of Buffalo.

MINI Grant Program

Our Mini-Grant Program offers small grants to neighborhood-based organizations in our target areas for volunteer projects that reduce blight. These grants range from $750 to $1000 and can cover projects from lighting vacant lots, to painting murals, or planting a community garden. Our Request For Proposals and further information on the Mini Grant Program are available here.

Volunteer Recruitment & Partnership Building

Eliminating blight in any community is hard work. It requires financial and physical commitments. Love Your Block aims to help small community organizations create foundations for lasting, sustainable change through building partnerships that facilitate volunteerism and create potential for future endeavors.

Technical Assistance

For groups looking to address blight in their community that do not qualify for our mini-grant program, our AmeriCorps VISTAs are always willing to offer their assistance. From appearing at your block club meeting to discuss a specific blight problem and shape projects around it, to connecting you to City and community services, we are here to increase the capacities of Buffalo’s residents.

CPTED Trainings

Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (or, CPTED) relies on the idea that the environment affects our behavior. Love Your Block wants to reduce crime in our target areas by shaping our projects around these principles. You can learn more about CPTED here.

Our Impact

Since 2009, over 9,000 community members across dozens of cities have revitalized more than 2,200 blocks. They have removed 5.6 million pounds of trash, created 900 art displays, cleaned 60,000 square feet of graffiti, repaired over 70,000 square feet of community space, and maintained over 730,000 square feet of public space.
